Pig Gig 2017

Every year, my family hosts the "Pig Gig." Every September, our friends and family come to our house for a day of fun on the farm. This year, we had about 140 guests arrive at our house to eat pig, ride the hayride, and hang out with the farm animals.

This year's Pig Gig was held on Saturday, September 30. After a long spell of hot weather, we somehow ended up with a chilly day, but the cold couldn't stop us from having fun! For the food, we provide the pig from Godfrey Brother's Meats. Everyone else brings along a side dish or dessert. I always say the week after the Pig Gig is the best food all year long! Here is a picture of my dad, Rich Wurzbach with the pig.

One big part of the Pig Gig is the hay ride. We attach a trailer on the back of our orange tractor, pile everyone in, and take a trip down to the overlook of Safe Harbor Dam of the Susquehanna River. Each trip takes about 35 minutes, a pretty long hay ride if you ask me! A few years ago, I earned the job of driving the tractor for the hay ride. Most of the guests love the hay ride and looks forward to it at every Pig Gig. The Pig Gig allows old friends to catch up, as well as meet new people!

Another positive of the Pig Gig is it allows Wurzbach Farms to showcase our animals and present a positive image of farmers and agriculture. This year, we had four calves in a pasture close to our house, allowing people to go inside of the fence and pet them. It showed people that the cattle are well treated and very friendly. Last year, we had very many apples that fell from the apple trees. This year, the apple harvest was much smaller, but we were still able to give a couple to the animals. Everyone loves interacting with the cattle. It also gives us an opportunity to market our humanely-raised beef. I have had much success marketing beef to people at the Pig Gig.

Pig Gig 2017 was a fun-filled chilly day. It gave people time to relax, have fun, and catch up with old friends. I cannot wait until next year!!
