Microteaching: A Reflection

Microteaching at Tyrone High School gave me an opportunity to test my teaching skills! I spent three days in an Introduction to Ag Careers class with 7 eighth graders with a unit on soils. We learned about the soil horizons, weathering, and soil ecology. Through in-class instruction, fold-ables, pudding cups, kahoot games, and much more, the students did a great working to understand the material.

Day 1: Soil Horizons

Day 2: Weathering and Soil Ecology

Day 3: Recap and Soil Horizon Pudding Cups

Each day, I looked forward to returning to Tyrone and working with the students. I loved incorporating Kahoots into the lessons. On Thursday, each student researched and created their own poster on a soil organism. This section went great! Each student found information that they found was important to include on their poster. On Friday, we created soil horizon pudding cups. Before students could build and eat their pudding, they had to answer questions that built on the three days of instruction.

I loved this opportunity and I learned that I may not always have lesson plans go how I plan them. When lessons take another direction, it can actually be more beneficial for the students!

I want to say thank you to the seven students at Tyrone. They were very understanding and worked hard to learn the information. Mrs. Hoy from Tyrone is such a rockstar teacher! I loved learning more about how she runs the phenomenal ag program at Tyrone. This experience got me even more excited to student teach next semester!
