After a three-week break from school, we jumped right back in with our cohort this weekend at Mid-Winter Convention. Held at the PA Farm Show, over 5,000 individuals gathered to watch students across the state earn their FFA Jackets and Keystone Degrees. In addition to the various awards, many distinguished individuals spoke to attendees. My first impression of the Mid-Winter Convention was a good one! I am excited to embark on my student teaching journey at Oley Valley High School after a great experience at Mid-Winter Convention.

The opening ceremonies of the 91st Mid-Winter Convention were followed by a few distinguished speakers. Secretary of Agriculture, Russell Redding, spoke of the importance of agriculture and agricultural education to the Commonwealth, as well as the new agreement with the department of education. The Secretary of Education, Pedro Rivera, commented on each student’s hard work and determination to get to where they were today. Dr. Kevin Curry recognized outstanding agriculture teachers from across the Commonwealth with a tree of influence. Mrs. Sherisa Nailor informed attendees about the true impact and importance of Pennsylvania’s Jacket Program. The Environmental Protection Agency’s individual connected the importance of an agreement between agriculture and the environment. The FFA Creed was performed by Emma O’Toole from West Perry FFA. Each speaker brought a unique perspective and appreciation for agricultural education and the FFA.

The Pennsylvania FFA Alumni Association created the PA Jacket Program with the help of various sponsors around the area. This year, 420 first year FFA members from across the state received their own FFA jacket with their name and chapter. As these members stood around the perimeter of the Farm Show Complex Large Area, they were instructed to put on their jackets at the same time. It was amazing to see all of the students putting on their jacket for the first time ever. 405 students received their Keystone Degree after years of hard work with their SAEs. It was awesome to hear each individuals name as they walked across the stage for their awards.

My first Mid-Winter Convention was a success! I am super pumped to continue my student teaching experience throughout the semester at Oley Valley High School and Middle School. The Mid-Winter Convention was a great start to the year!
